Reworked Image

I enjoy re-working my images every now and then.  Not only will my mood be different, but I hope that I’ve gotten better at my post processing.   Today, I decided to rework the image below.  I processed this one a few years ago in Nik Software’s Silver FX 2.  I wanted to see what I would do differently now with the same image and same basic direction.  Rather then totally redo it, I wanted to keep the same idea (monotone with a bit of color in the googles) and see how the two would be different.

This is the one I processed a few years ago:

Sam with Goggles Version 1

This is the reworked version:

Sam with Goggles Version 2

Keeping it the same, I think the second one is better.  More detail, a slightly different crop, better eyes . . .

Like I said, I purposely tried to keep it the same but go at it a totally different way. Tell me what you think.  Which is better for you??  Does it really make a difference to you??

Decade Old Damaged Film

I posted this picture about a year ago, but I wanted to do it again here with a bit more of a story.  The story behind this photo is more then just the story of taking it, but it is also a bit of an insight into my messed up mind.  Does that interest you at all??

First, the story of the photo.  We were visiting NYC back in early 2000.  We were there with my wife’s sister and some of her friends.  The last few times we went there the Empire State Building was packed – lines well over a few hours to take the elevator to the top. This time it was raining and totally cloudy – absolutely nobody was going up there.  We decided to go anyway just for the story of being there and seeing nothing at all. When we bought our tickets the manager came out and told us over and over again that there was no refund at all, and he thought we were nuts for paying to go up now.  We didn’t care, we just wanted to be up there alone.  On the observation deck we saw nothing.  Not a thing.  Just clouds, fog, and wet walk ways.  Then, for maybe 1 minute total, the clouds broke and the scene above was there.  I had my camera and only had time for one exposure.

Now that you know about the photo itself, lets talk about my OCD behavior and mind.  After our NYC trip, I was excited to see if this picture came out.  When I thought about the trip, this is all I thought about.  When I picked up the film from the processor (yep, I was shooting film back then) the shot from the Empire State Building was not there.  I must have been missing a roll.  I didn’t know if the processor lost it or if I did.  I looked everywhere, but to no luck.  It drove me crazy for years.

Over the next decade I thought about it constantly, I just knew there was a good image there, but it was lost.  I constantly looked for lost rolls of film.  I kicked myself over it thousands of times.  After moving the family 3 or 4 times around New England, then out to Orange County, CA, then to Ventura County, CA, I eventually found a zip-lock bag in a box in the garage that had 10 or 15 rolls of film.  I don’t think I had opened this box for 10 years.  My first thought was that my NY roll of film may be one of these.  Much of the film was at least a decade old, some well over 20 years old, I knew because I rolled my own film back then.  I took it to the processor (which I had to find since I never use film anymore) and luckily the film worked.  It was damaged (as you can see above), the color didn’t work, and it was covered with light leaks. But it worked.

Finding this picture somehow lifted a weight off of my shoulders and is one of the favorite things that has happened to me photographically in the last few year or so.  I know this picture will not change anything or impress anybody, and really is not even a great image, but to me it is fantastic.  It is funny to me how much I remembered and thought about that moment when the clouds broke, and I happened to have the camera ready to go.  It took over a decade, but the picture worked out for me at least.

Ken White - Very interesting story. I don’t think you could deliberately produce an image of New York that evokes more mystery and drama than this one. The contribution of aging and light degradation has enhanced you original to produce subtle beauty.

Jon - Thank you Ken!

Turnbill - Wow, a beautiful shot to go with a great story. You’ve got some good karma!

Melissa

Melissa

Melissa just began working on my team at “the day job” a week or so ago.  I let her know that she is going to have to get used to me always having my camera and I like to shot people.  I took her right outside my office to get her first portrait done.  I was standing less then 5 feet from my desk when I took this.

I’m really excited that she joined our team.  She is from the area, but has been living in a small ski resort in NY state.  I get a bit jealous talking about the skiing – I don’t get to do that much anymore.  I’m pretty sure “not doing it” is a good thing now.  My head says I’m still 16, but my body no longer agrees.

Nielsen’s Family Portrait at the Beach

I’m so far behind on blogging my latest sessions that it may take a while to catch up, but I’m going to try.

First up is the Nielsen’s. If you follow me on Facebook (if you don’t already “like” me now) you may have seen these but I think with a family this beautiful it is worth blogging about formally. This is a family that we’ve known for a while and they are wonderful. They have 6 beautiful girls who are some of the nicest girls I’ve ever met. They are all so happy all the time.

I also want to share the “Long Portrait” I took of them.  I hadn’t done one of these in a while but I still really like them.  I think of them not as a video but as a portrait where you get a chance to see more of their true personalities, mannerisms, and subtle interactions.  Of course you can also think of it like a Harry Potter moving picture type thing if you want.

I’ve recently found out that all of their cousins in related families are in “gender” groups like theirs as well. What I mean is that their cousins are also in big families with only boys and/or girls in each family. What are the chances of that?

Anyway, my wife and I took them to one of our favorite beach spots just south of Ventura. I’m not going to tell you where it is because one of the reasons I like it is that it is never crowded. If I share the spot I could ruin that. So, if you want to know where it is you are just going to have to hire me for some beach portraits.

We spent some time on the dunes, then went down to the water. The wind was coming off the water pretty hard so at times it was hard to keep their hair and dresses under control but it was fun. One of my favorite shots below was taken almost by accident. I had them all hold hands but because of the wind they faced the water.  I had to turn them around but before I did, I took a quick shot.  The sun was perfect, there are two seagulls flying by, it was great. The moral of this story is always be ready to take the picture. I always find the best images happen quickly and usually by accident.

Thank you Nielsen’s for a wonderful time and for being so beautiful!

White on White (iPhoneography)

White on White

As I move my photoblog exploits over to this site, I’m going to be working in my iPhoneography here as well. For those of you who haven’t seen this part of my work, it’s simple – photos taken and process on the iphone.   This is looking up into a corner of two walls and a ceiling in the local mall.  It is a partially outside, and partially inside mall.  As I walked through the outside parts I looked up and saw this subtle looking shadows on all the whiteness of the walls.

Jamie – My Beautiful Wife

 Jamie

Eventually I will be moving my photoblog photos over to this area of my blog.  But for now I will just start with this one.  I mentioned yesterday that I need to simplify my web life.  I need “one blog to rule them all”.  I think this is going to be the place.  I’ll share everthing here (and a few other minor places, but here is where you will find every thing.

Anyway, this is my wife.  Jamie. Like most adults over the age of 14, she hates seeing pictures of herself.  I don’t know why, I think she looks amazing.  I was working on editing some wedding pictures tonight and this one was in there. She was just standing there as I tested my flash.  And now it ends up here.  Fun.
